<span style="background-color: white;">This seems to be the common knock on <em>The Walk</em>: The opening two acts, with Joseph Gordon-Levitt mugging and posing and burbling in a French accent and <em>Dumb and Dumber</em> wig as high-wire walker Philippe Petit, can't seem to decide what it wants to be. One moment it's all circusy mischief, with forced perspective and vibrant colors against black and white; the next, it's a serious character study, but one that only scratches at the surface of why Petit wanted to traverse the World Trade Center towers in the first place.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: white;">Deeper frustrations with the first two acts of <em>The Walk</em> can all be connected to James Marsh's<em>Man on Wire</em>, a documentary that played more like a heist thriller and won the Academy Award in 2009 for Best Documentary Feature. Petit himself narrated that film, which was rich with photos and footage to propel the story along.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: white;">If you've seen <em>Man on Wire</em>, you'll recognize <em>The Walk</em>'s voiceover narration style, most of its characters ... even a few of the establishing scenes, which were lifted right out of the doc and colorized and stylized for <em>The Walk</em>.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: white;">In part, this is because both <em>Man on Wire</em> and <em>The Walk</em> are based on Petit's book "To Reach the Clouds," and that's a good thing: Everything that happened between Petit and his squad of misfit accomplices getting their plan in motion and the moment he took his first steps is too fantastical for fiction.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: white;">The answer is not clear until Gordon-Levitt ascends the World Trade Center for the first time and, taking a few steps out onto an overhanging steel beam, looks down. From there, the story of Petit's 1974 high-wire "coup" (his word) grabs you by the ascot and doesn't let go. You realize that the thing you've been checking your watch for is almost <em>here</em> — and you're still not ready for it. Not at all.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: white;">This is where cinematographer Dariusz Wolski (the <em>Pirates</em> franchise, <em>The Martian</em>) takes over, showing us just enough of the behemoth buildings, the surrounding skyline — and yes, a few gulp-inducing glimpses 110 stories straight down — to get the viscera pulsing. There's nothing you can do but grip your chair and watch it play out. And, just as you think it's safe to breathe again, Petit has one last surprise in store. (It doesn't matter how well you know the story; your heart will still go into your throat when he pulls this one out from his sleeve.)</span></div>

He's out there — and now you just want him to go back in. As fast as possible, please. It's the same illusion of deep discomfort you feel in a dark haunted house or on a mammoth roller coaster, places whose magic lies as much in the anticipation as it does in the ride down. And this case, it's a loooong ride down.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: white;">Here's where it only seems fair to look at the beginning of <em>The Walk</em> in hindsight and wonder: Were they just winding us up for this the whole time? Was this entire film purpose-built to crank up the tension for the big payoff? If it was — and it sure didn't seem that way — it's a genius slight-of-hand trick. If it wasn't, who cares? It worked anyway.</span></div>

Gordon-Levitt feels more like he's hosting the movie than acting in it, but his performance does eventually add up to something more than just a well-shot walk across a high-wire. And isn't it refreshing for an iffy film's end to ultimately redeem it, when we're so used to seeing things the other way around?</span></div>

But what helped propel the film to the box office stratosphere was that the creative genius behind the film was Hong Kong director and animator Raman Hui — best known as the character designer for <em>Shrek</em>. Plus, the film literally had no serious competition during China’s summer “black-out” period when foreign films are banned from mainland theaters.</div>

<em>Monster Hunt</em> also had another important thing going for it — the financial backing and marketing power of one of China’s biggest Internet companies, Tencent.</div>

Already kings of their own online domains, China’s biggest tech companies — Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent (known collectively in the Chinese media as “BAT”) — are now taking their rivalry to the big screen, sparking what could be a dramatic shift in the film industry in China, with ripple effects sure to be felt in Hollywood.</div>

All three companies made big splashes with the launch of film production arms last year, with Baidu-backed iQiYi Motion Pictures, Alibaba Pictures Group and Tencent Movie Plus.</div>

“(Filmmaking) is a very highly visible business in China,” says Rob Cain, head of Pacific Group Pictures, a consultancy focused on the Chinese entertainment industry, and founder of the<a href="http://chinafilmbiz.com/" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">ChinaFilmBiz blog</a>. “The marketing value, the way it helps increase the profile and the attention for a company, I think that’s really what they’re after.”</div>

Indeed, this is certainly what Alibaba founder Jack Ma wants. Since launching Alibaba Pictures Group, he’s taken meetings with just about everyone in Hollywood, from Sony and Disney to Universal, and so on. Earlier this summer, he announced the company was making its first Hollywood investment by co-financing Paramount’s <em>Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation</em>.</div>

What Ma is really excited about, though, is making his own films. And thanks to his deep pockets, he’s reportedly lined up the best in the business in China to do just that. Filmmaker Wong Kar-wai and actor Tony Leung, who have collaborated on a number of movies, including the 2000 hit <em>In the Mood for Love</em>, have signed on to produce Alibaba Pictures’ first film called<a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/chinas-alibaba-pictures-first-movie-762510" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank"><em>Bai Du Ren</em></a>, or <em>The Ferryman</em>, based on a short story by the novelist Zhang Jiajia.</div>

iQiYi scored a major partnership deal worth with Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi worth US$300 million, as well as a further US$300 million in funding from Baidu, to fund its budding film group. It claims to have already completed <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/berlin-iqiyi-pictures-exec-li-770562" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">seven domestic films</a> and one unnamed Hollywood co-production.</div>

These tech companies obviously bring massive financial resources, extensive distribution and marketing capabilities, and a large audience base from their various online platforms, but the question remains: Can they make quality films?</div>

Rance Pow, the founder of Artisan Gateway, an Asian film industry consulting company based in Shanghai and Hong Kong, believes they can likely succeed initially from a technical standpoint and produce “very good-looking films on par with the world’s best production companies in very short order.”</div>

Due to their varied online networks, the Chinese tech companies already have a wealth of content to work with from non-traditional sources, such as online video, game and book series created by young, non-professional screenwriters.</div>

Alibaba’s <em>Bai Du Ren</em>, for example, will be developed from a story published on <a href="http://weibo.com/zhangjiajia" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Zhang Jiajia</a>’s Weibo page, while Tencent has made a series of animated films called <em>Roco Kingdom</em>based on its <a href="http://17roco.qq.com/" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">popular online game</a> of the same name.</div>

But it will take time to develop a steady supply of reliably decent films this way. “In terms of story development or selection, what gets green-lit to make it to production,” Pow says, “that’s probably the area where Chinese tech companies and traditional film studios have the greatest room to grow.”</div>

This may be where Hollywood can help. The big players in the Chinese film world, from the traditional movie studios to the tech newcomers, realize this and are actively seeking partners and investment opportunities in Los Angeles. “A lot of relationships are being made as we speak,” Pow says. “For the Chinese tech companies, this is a seat at the table in the global film industry.”</div>

It’s a win-win situation. Chinese film companies want to expand beyond the domestic market and learn how to produce films that become global blockbusters — <em>Monster Hunt</em>, as Cain points out, is probably not going to translate well to a non-Chinese audience.</div>

And Hollywood studios are jockeying for position in the world’s second-largest film market, trying to secure more advantageous release dates for their films in Chinese cinemas and the ability to make movies on the ground in China.</div>

The pressure is certainly on for BAT, given how much they’ve trumpeted their arrival on the red carpet. Alibaba Pictures Group alone has seen its stock value reach nearly US$10 billion on the Hong Kong stock exchange before it’s even released its first film. “To justify that (valuation),” says Cain, “you’ve got to do more than an occasional movie with Wong Kar-wai.”</div>

The <em>Fast and Furious</em> series star died with friend Paul Rodas in a Nov. 2013 car crash, but on this, the late actor's birthday, it seems more appropriate to look back on the good times before his career was tragically cut short.</div>

Walker, a Glendale, California native and the oldest of five siblings, was the son of fashion model Cheryl Crabtree Walker and two-time Golden Gloves champ Paul William Walker III. Paul started acting as a toddler, appearing first in a Pampers diapers commercial and later in an assortment of popular TV series and soap operas, including <em>Who's the Boss?</em>, <em>Charles in Charge</em>, and <em>The Young and the Restless</em>.</div>

<em>Deedles</em> was a flop, but the exposure was enough to set Walker up with a series of supporting roles in <em>Pleasantville</em>, <em>Varsity Blues</em>, <em>She's All That</em> and <em>The Skulls.</em> These, in turn, set him up for his 2001 breakout, when he starred opposite Vin Diesel in the high-speed car chase blockbuster <em>The Fast and the Furious</em>.</div>

The organization oversees "a network of professionals with first responder skill-sets" who are deployed to natural disaster zones, where they provide aid and expertise to local relief efforts.</div>
