YouTube just got a redesign.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
The video streaming service updated its <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/youtube/id544007664?mt=8" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">iOS app</a>, giving it a material design treatment and in-app video editing tools. Launch the app, and you'll notice a major change. There's way more red, and you can toggle between Home, Subscriptions and Account using the tabs at the top. YouTube also tweaked its app icon, trading in a red background for white and white play button for red.</div>
<div class="see-also" style="font-weight: bold; text-transform: uppercase;">
<div class="inline-ad-seealso" style="margin: 0px 18.75px 0px auto; max-width: 625px;">
</div>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
The app's previous home page design was mostly white and gray, and you accessed the navigation bar by sliding it open from the left of the screen. In the old app, you could upload videos from your phone, but now you can edit them, too. The tools are pretty standard right now. You can trim your video and choose from a handful of filters. There's also an option to add music. Choose from featured tracks, filter by genre and mood or upload songs that are already on your device.</div>

When Variety reported last year that, for teenagers, the five most influential celebrities all made their name on YouTube, you could hear the alarms from Hollywood Boulevard to Madison Avenue. This year Variety did the study again: Now 8 of the top 10 stars are YouTubers.  From casting to creative to CEO, memo received.</div>
<div style="-webkit-margin-after: 0px; -webkit-margin-before: 0px; -webkit-padding-start: 0px; background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Enter Tanya Bershadsky and her new company Casting Influence. Someone who describes herself as drawn to the “bleeding edge,” the Russian-born and Brooklyn-reared producer and writer was drawn to YouTube early. Over the past decade, she has befriended and helped many early YouTubers, including some on those Variety lists. More recently, she served as a producer and booker for Larry King as he made the transition from traditional to digital, and her latest idea is pointed in the other direction. Casting Influence, described as a “<span style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">casting, booking, and talent strategy company specializing in digital celebrities and innovators,” is opening the lanes for stars from YouTube and other digital platforms to enter traditional entertainment.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-margin-after: 0px; -webkit-margin-before: 0px; -webkit-padding-start: 0px; background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
In this email interview, Bershadsky discusses what her clients are seeking in digital celebrities (it’s not always massive audiences), how the larger culture is starting to wake up to their influence and the sacrifices YouTube stars make to stay relevant.</div>
<div article-ad-inbody="inread" class="inread ng-isolate-scope inread-active" id="article-0-inread" style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 17.6000003814697px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
</div>
<div style="-webkit-margin-after: 0px; -webkit-margin-before: 0px; -webkit-padding-start: 0px; background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: 700; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">What makes a YouTube celebrity appealing to a show or brand? Are there certain qualities, beyond audience of course, that you notice works for entertainment outside of YouTube?</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-margin-after: 0px; -webkit-margin-before: 0px; -webkit-padding-start: 0px; background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
For brand deals, the most important thing of course is the talent has to fit the brand. Depending on what the brand is, I have to search out talent that has whatever number of subscribers/views/etc someone has, plus no cursing, no talking about sex, no anything that would raise any eyebrows. And then say for a pet brand….have a cat. You’d be surprised how few YouTubers own cats.</div>
<div style="-webkit-margin-after: 0px; -webkit-margin-before: 0px; -webkit-padding-start: 0px; background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
For casting a show, specifically a hosted show, being natural is #1. If I see someone who vlogs like they’re talking to a friend over dinner, that name will go down in that part of my brain that remembers faces and names. And I’ll pull it up months later when the right project comes up. Which just happened for a Disney show. I saw this kid on some shoot last year. I helped out some friends on a low budget project and they were really short staffed. He was new-ish to the influencer world then, at about 100k on YouTube, but he was really charismatic, great on camera, and really cute. He didn’t know who I was, I was just helping for the day. But I said “You. I don’t know what yet, I don’t know when, but you…I’m gonna put you in something.” He’s now hosting a Disney show that launches this month.</div>
<div style="-webkit-margin-after: 0px; -webkit-margin-before: 0px; -webkit-padding-start: 0px; background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-margin-after: 0px; -webkit-margin-before: 0px; -webkit-padding-start: 0px; background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="line-height: 24.6400012969971px;">But it’s really a case by case basis for everything else.  YouTube’s style for the most part doesn’t translate to film. It’s big, it’s loud, it’s fast. There’s a de-training that needs to happen sometimes to go from YouTube to TV/film. But there are definitely many who are good actors already.  A lot of the online talent started out as actors and came to YouTube to find a way to reach the masses outside of the Hollywood system.</span></div>

<div style="background-color: white; color: #7e7e7e; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 20px;">
YouTubers have got the potential to completely <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD8" style="background-attachment: scroll !important; background-clip: initial !important; background-color: transparent !important; background-image: none !important; background-origin: initial !important; background-position: 0% 50%; background-repeat: repeat !important; background-size: initial !important; border-bottom-color: rgb(0, 153, 0) !important; border-bottom-style: solid !important; border-bottom-width: 1px !important; color: rgb(0, 153, 0) !important; cursor: pointer !important; display: inline !important; float: none !important; padding: 0px 0px 1px !important; position: static; text-decoration: underline !important;">change</span>, well, a lot, and they already are. Getting a product into the hands of a popular vlogger or partnering with one is marketing gold, so the way companies advertise and market their products is changing.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #7e7e7e; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 20px;">
Some YouTubers are never even seen on camera. There are plenty of gaming vloggers who can be heard giving commentary over the top of gameplay walkthroughs and more. In fact, the most popular YouTube channel in the world is that of PewDiePie, with a whopping 38 million subscribers.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #7e7e7e; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 20px;">
According to a report by Neilsen last year YouTube reaches more 18-34 year-olds in the US than any TV network, so the way we consume content is changing, too.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #7e7e7e; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 20px;">
They’re also getting <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD10" style="background-attachment: scroll !important; background-clip: initial !important; background-color: transparent !important; background-image: none !important; background-origin: initial !important; background-position: 0% 50%; background-repeat: repeat !important; background-size: initial !important; border-bottom-color: rgb(0, 153, 0) !important; border-bottom-style: solid !important; border-bottom-width: 1px !important; color: rgb(0, 153, 0) !important; cursor: pointer !important; display: inline !important; float: none !important; padding: 0px 0px 1px !important; position: static; text-decoration: underline !important;">book deals</span> and movie contracts, and Zoella’s debut novel Girl<span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD6" style="background-attachment: scroll !important; background-clip: initial !important; background-color: transparent !important; background-image: none !important; background-origin: initial !important; background-position: 0% 50%; background-repeat: repeat !important; background-size: initial !important; border-bottom-color: rgb(0, 153, 0) !important; border-bottom-style: solid !important; border-bottom-width: 1px !important; color: rgb(0, 153, 0) !important; cursor: pointer !important; display: inline !important; float: none !important; padding: 0px 0px 1px !important; position: static; text-decoration: underline !important;">Online</span> became the fastest-selling book of 2014 and <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD11" style="background-attachment: scroll !important; background-clip: initial !important; background-color: transparent !important; background-image: none !important; background-origin: initial !important; background-position: 0% 50%; background-repeat: repeat !important; background-size: initial !important; border-bottom-color: rgb(0, 153, 0) !important; border-bottom-style: solid !important; border-bottom-width: 1px !important; color: rgb(0, 153, 0) !important; cursor: pointer !important; display: inline !important; float: none !important; padding: 0px 0px 1px !important; position: static; text-decoration: underline !important;">broke the record</span> for the highest first-week sales for a debut author.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #7e7e7e; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 20px;">
I’m interested to see what the future holds for vlogging – it’s a pretty exciting movement in my eyes, and another way that the internet is giving everyone a voice and making the world accessible to us all. YouTube has the potential to make anyone with <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD1" style="background-attachment: scroll !important; background-clip: initial !important; background-color: transparent !important; background-image: none !important; background-origin: initial !important; background-position: 0% 50%; background-repeat: repeat !important; background-size: initial !important; border-bottom-color: rgb(0, 153, 0) !important; border-bottom-style: solid !important; border-bottom-width: 1px !important; color: rgb(0, 153, 0) !important; cursor: pointer !important; display: inline !important; float: none !important; padding: 0px 0px 1px !important; position: static; text-decoration: underline !important;">access to the internet</span> and a <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD3" style="background-attachment: scroll !important; background-clip: initial !important; background-color: transparent !important; background-image: none !important; background-origin: initial !important; background-position: 0% 50%; background-repeat: repeat !important; background-size: initial !important; border-bottom-color: rgb(0, 153, 0) !important; border-bottom-style: solid !important; border-bottom-width: 1px !important; color: rgb(0, 153, 0) !important; cursor: pointer !important; display: inline !important; float: none !important; padding: 0px 0px 1px !important; position: static; text-decoration: underline !important;">video</span> camera (which, lets face it, we all have on our smartphones) rich and famous from the comfort of their own home, no matter what their background is, where they come from, or what their <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD12" style="background-attachment: scroll !important; background-clip: initial !important; background-color: transparent !important; background-image: none !important; background-origin: initial !important; background-position: 0% 50%; background-repeat: repeat !important; background-size: initial !important; border-bottom-color: rgb(0, 153, 0) !important; border-bottom-style: solid !important; border-bottom-width: 1px !important; color: rgb(0, 153, 0) !important; cursor: pointer !important; display: inline !important; float: none !important; padding: 0px 0px 1px !important; position: static; text-decoration: underline !important;">career aspirations</span> might be. They’ve got access to an enormous global audience, instantly.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #7e7e7e; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 20px;">
Not everyone agrees – some think that talking to a camera from the comfort of your bedroom doesn’t deserve to earn these YouTubers millions, but they’re all entrepeneurs in their own right, taking the initiative to turn their hobby into a career, and I think it’s admirable.</div>
