Facebook is testing a new feature in Messenger called "Photo Magic," which uses face recognition to make it easier for people to share photos with friends right after they shoot them. The test will begin to roll out to iOS and Android users in Australia this week.</div>

The concept is similar to Moments, the private photo-sharing app Facebook launched earlier this year. When enabled, Messenger will nudge you to share photos when it detects a new picture with a certain friend in your camera roll.</div>

The option to enable the feature will begin to show up in Messenger this week. If you don't opt-in, you won't see suggestions for the photos you take, though you will appear in the suggestions of your friends who have the feature enabled if you have <a href="https://www.facebook.com/help/122175507864081" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">tag suggestions</a>enabled.</div>

Say you snap a photo of a group of friends at a party, Facebook will detect the faces of people you're friends with in the most recent image on your camera roll. Within a few seconds (if you're on Android) or a few minutes (if you're on iOS), you'll see a push notification suggesting you send the photo via Messenger to the friends who are in the photo.</div>

Photo Magic uses the same facial recognition technology in tag suggestions on Facebook and in the moments app, Peter Martinazzi, a product manager for Messenger, said.</div>

"It’s all using the same tech on the back end," Martinazzi tells <em>Mashable</em>. "If you get a new picture, whether you took that picture in your camera app or in a different app, and it goes to your camera roll, then we’ll face detect on that picture. Then we’ll send you the local notification for you to send that photo [to friends] if you want to."</div>

As with most facial recognition tech, there's the possibility that users may be a little creeped out at the prospect of Facebook looking for faces in photos, but Martinazzi emphasized that anyone can opt out of either having their face detected in photos or seeing suggestions for their own images.</div>

The suggestions will follow the same settings you have enabled in the main Facebook app, so those who have <a href="https://www.facebook.com/help/122175507864081" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">tag suggestions</a> disabled won't be able to have their faces detected in friends' camera rolls. (Photo Magic will not detect the faces of people that aren't Facebook friends.)</div>

Though the experiment is Australia only for now, Martinazzi says the goal is to eventually bring it to more countries — provided people respond well to the initial tests.</div>

Facebook started to tackle this problem in India in February last year with Internet.org, its scheme to offer free access to a selection of sites and apps for people who would otherwise be offline. It does this by partnering with one telco in each company where it's rolled out.</div>

However, this has been controversial. Since Internet.org does not offer access to the whole Internet, many observers and governments slammed the plan as akin to demolishing Net Neutrality.</div>

The backlash is especially strong in India, forcing Zuckerberg to rethink the way Internet.org operated in the country. Last month, the program was renamed Free Basics. This week, it opened up to developers so they could <a href="https://www.techinasia.com/facebook-awards-social-startups-for-internet-org/" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">create services aimed at people in India's countryside</a>, such as farmers and students.</div>

2. Changing Facebook so it works better on slower connections</h3>

To make sure users in India don't run into issues on Facebook caused by slow web connections, Facebook earlier this month <a href="https://newsroom.fb.com/news/2015/10/news-feed-fyi-building-for-all-connectivity/" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">said it would start</a> "building for all connectivity." That means making tweaks to the News Feed so that, when the site notices a user is on a 2G or shaky line, it won't load videos, and instead the News Feed will show more status updates and links.</div>

If a connection is flaking out, Facebook is now ready for that too. "Sometimes we are unable to load any new News Feed stories if a connection is particularly congested or poor quality. People have told us that when they visit News Feed they'd rather see stories that may have loaded on a previous visit than not see any stories at all. So now when you leave News Feed and then come back again on a bad connection, we will display previously downloaded stories," explained Chris Marra and Alex Sourov from the emerging markets team at Facebook.</div>

Facebook's social good team, which numbers in the dozens, is less focused on activism and on-the-ground work than building a new suite of products that tap into the social causes and personal needs of its community. Even those efforts can have a tremendous impact when you consider every feature has the potential to tap into a community of nearly 1.5 billion people.</div>

The group has so far worked to push out <a href="https://www.facebook.com/zuck/posts/10101854154915481" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Amber Alerts</a> to help find missing children, a feature called <a href="https://www.facebook.com/about/safetycheck/" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Safety Check</a> to quickly notify friends and family that you're safe after a disaster and a simplified Donate Now button used to raise money for ALS during the viral Ice Bucket Challenge and after the devastating Nepal earthquake. The last of those raised $10 million from some 700,000 users for Nepal relief.</div>

This week, however, Gleit and others are planning to attend dinners, happy hours and a closed door demo with 20 non-profits to learn from the community and get its foot in the door.</div>

He has also used Facebook's vast resources to push for Internet access in the emerging world, occasionally to the frustration of Facebook analysts who question the benefits of this approach to the bottom line.</div>

The company has largely ignored Notes for years; the last major update was in 2010 — but as Facebook increasingly builds out its publishing features for media outlets, it makes sense to encourage its 1.25 billion users to think of the social network as a place for their own blog posts as well.</div>

Users now have access to a set of basic text formatting tools — like headers, block quotes and bulleted and numbered lists — and can add cover images to each note.</span></div>

Some of these formatting options, and the ability to embed photos, were available in previous versions of Notes. But the redesign makes the feature much more elegant. With a new font and more visually appealing layout, Notes now look more like blog posts than extended status updates.</div>
