Facebook is going all out on India. That makes sense. With Mark Zuckerberg looking ahead at saturation in mature markets like Europe and North America, and with his social network locked out of China, he's pushing forward a lot of things to ensure that Facebook gains plenty of growth from India.</div>

But Facebook wants a lot more. It wants "the next billion people," as the company has called them, who'll use Facebook and all its sister apps, like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram.</div>

Facebook started to tackle this problem in India in February last year with Internet.org, its scheme to offer free access to a selection of sites and apps for people who would otherwise be offline. It does this by partnering with one telco in each company where it's rolled out.</div>

However, this has been controversial. Since Internet.org does not offer access to the whole Internet, many observers and governments slammed the plan as akin to demolishing Net Neutrality.</div>

The backlash is especially strong in India, forcing Zuckerberg to rethink the way Internet.org operated in the country. Last month, the program was renamed Free Basics. This week, it opened up to developers so they could <a href="https://www.techinasia.com/facebook-awards-social-startups-for-internet-org/" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">create services aimed at people in India's countryside</a>, such as farmers and students.</div>

Although Facebook has sweetened the deal for its (very limited) free Internet, the company is not yet out of hot water and a name change to Free Basics doesn't mean people will forget about the Net Neutrality issue.</div>

2. Changing Facebook so it works better on slower connections</h3>

To make sure users in India don't run into issues on Facebook caused by slow web connections, Facebook earlier this month <a href="https://newsroom.fb.com/news/2015/10/news-feed-fyi-building-for-all-connectivity/" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">said it would start</a> "building for all connectivity." That means making tweaks to the News Feed so that, when the site notices a user is on a 2G or shaky line, it won't load videos, and instead the News Feed will show more status updates and links.</div>

If a connection is flaking out, Facebook is now ready for that too. "Sometimes we are unable to load any new News Feed stories if a connection is particularly congested or poor quality. People have told us that when they visit News Feed they'd rather see stories that may have loaded on a previous visit than not see any stories at all. So now when you leave News Feed and then come back again on a bad connection, we will display previously downloaded stories," explained Chris Marra and Alex Sourov from the emerging markets team at Facebook.</div>

She says they want to connect with brands and they often share ads they like, taking screenshots and sending them to friends or displaying them on their profiles.</div>

Each user is able to contribute their own updates about the current conditions in their area, which is used in conjunction with sensor and government data for what the company says is a hyper accurate forecast.<br /><br /><br /><strong>Pro-tip:</strong> You can set your own personal “comfort zone” for your preferred temperature range and the app will send you a personalized forecast based on your preferences. </div>

A report in <em>The New York Times</em> brought the censoring of the app to light <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/12/technology/apple-is-said-to-deactivate-its-news-app-in-china.html" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">on Saturday</a>, citing a person "with direct knowledge of the situation." Although the app is still only officially available in the U.S., users who have downloaded and used the app in the U.S. can generally use the app while abroad in other countries. However, that doesn't appear to be the case in mainland China.</div>

One Hong Kong-based user by the name of Larry Salibra detailed <a href="https://www.larrysalibra.com/how-apple-censors-news-in-china/" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">his own experiences</a>with the app in Hong Kong and mainland China. When using Hong Kong mobile networks, he was able to refresh the Apple News app and find fresh news stories.</div>

But when he traveled over to mainland China and switched to mainland China phone networks, the app refused to refresh and show updated news stories. When he tried, the app displayed the following message: "Can't refresh right now. News isn't supported in your current region."</div>

According to Apple's wesbite, Sydney and Boston will soon be among the 13 cities where the app can help users find a route on public transport, from buses to trains.</div>

Apple users who have updated to iOS 9 should see a "public transport" button appear in the app, although it is not functioning yet. An Apple spokesperson told <em>Mashable Australia</em> transit options should be available in Sydney at some point in October, but could not give a specific date.</div>

In an email sent by LinkedIn on Friday, users were notified that they were eligible for a class action settlement related to email marketing. The company has agreed to pay out $13 million to users who may have been impacted by its Add Connections service. The settlement stems from a 2013 class action lawsuit filed in California.</div>

LinkedIn's Add Connections program allowed users to import their personal contacts into the company's system and then have invitations to connect on LinkedIn sent out on their behalf. However, if a recipient of the invitation email didn't accept the invitation within a certain amount of time, LinkedIn would then send two follow up emails repeating the invitation.</div>

If you're a big fan of LinkedIn, that's called thorough follow-up. But others, less familiar with the service, might consider such messages to be annoying spam. What makes such an instance worse is if the recipient thinks the spammy messages are coming from you, a person they know, rather than a third party.</div>

Within the settlement notification emails are individual claim ID numbers, which can then be used to file a claim for your chunk of $13 million. Of course, no one is expecting any of the claimants to win big money, but if the final tally of any of the claimants results in an individual payout of less than $10, LinkedIn has agreed to add an additional $750,000 to the overall payout fund.</div>

LinkedIn's payout is designed to cover a broad range of email activity, from September 17, 2011 and October 31, 2014. But for LinkedIn users, there's a catch. On the claim form you must swear (under penalty of perjury) that you were indeed a user of Add Connections during the aforementioned time span. So if you're just annoyed by LinkedIn emails, but aren’t sure if you used Add Connections yourself, you may want to check before you submit your claim for a slice of the payout.</div>

When contacted by <em>Mashable</em>, a LinkedIn spokesperson stated that because the court, "suggested that we could be more clear about the fact that we send reminder emails about pending invitations from LinkedIn members, we have made changes to our product and Privacy Policy. Ultimately, we decided to resolve this case so that we can put our focus where it matters most: finding additional ways to improve our members’ experiences on LinkedIn."</div>
