Android M Developer Preview 3 Gets Delayed, Expected to Be “Near Final” Release

<h2 class="subtitle curpo ellip mgtop_20 w620" title="The final Android M build should arrive in October">The final Android M build should arrive in October</h2><br/><div><br/><p class="intro"><strong>The advent of Lollipop marked the first time Google offered a developer preview for its upcoming Android build. And with Android M, the system was made even smoother with the introduction of OTA updates.</strong></p><br/><p class="mgbot_20">The first Android M Developer Preview got introduced a few hours after the I/O 2015 keynote, and last month we saw the second Developer Preview 2 make its way into the wild. But as far as the third preview of Google’s upcoming Android M is concerned, things are getting a bit trickier.</p><br/><p class="mgbot_20">The information is not your common hearsay but was shared by a Google employee via the Android M Developer Preview community page on <a href="https://plus.google.com/+WojtekKalicinski/posts/ZZZj3mGParp" target="_blank">Google+</a>.</p><br/><p class="mgbot_20">What's the reason behind the delay, you might wonder. Well, it appears Google wants its Android M Developer Preview 3 to be “a near final release,” so the company needs a little bit more time to work on that. Still, the preview will be made available pretty soon, but for now, Google hasn’t shared an exact launch date.</p><br/><br/><h3>Android M and the new Nexus devices will probably arrive at the same time</h3><br/><p class="mgbot_20">On top of launching Android M into the wild, Google is also expected to unveil two new Nexus smartphones. One will be a reiteration of its 2013 Nexus 5 and will be once again manufactured by LG. For the second one, Google will be partnering up for the first time with Chinese smartphone maker Huawei.</p><br/><p class="mgbot_20">The phone is expected to arrive with a 5.7-inch QHD display (2560 x 1440 pixel resolution) and take advantage of the services of a Snapdragon 810. Previously, we were told the handset might be bundled with a Snapdragon 820 chipset, but given the fact that Qualcomm is expected to start shipping out the silicone this December, the first models bundling the new architecture are tipped to make it out on the market in March.</p><br/><p class="mgbot_20">As for the new LG Nexus 5, not much is known about it except that it could bundle a 3D dual camera and a fingerprint scanner (like the Huawei Nexus).</p><br/><p class="mgbot_20">The two Nexus devices will be the first to arrive with Android M, which will most likely get version 5.2 and not 6.0.</p><br/><br/></div>

B612 is a better Retrica

B612 is an app designed especially for talking selfies, and we think it should be the app you choose when you want them to look extra special.<br/><br/>I know, the name is hardly memorable unless you're a fan of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Little_Prince" target="_blank" title="The Little Prince on Wikipedia">The Little Prince</a>, and I also know that selfies might be a bit 2014. Or even 2013? I digress. B612 is pretty similar to<a href="http://retrica.en.softonic.com/android" title="Retrica">Retrica</a>, another photo app that's taken app stores by storm, but don't be fooled by its popularity. There are plenty of reasons to dump Retrica and download B.. 6... something...?<br/><br/>Never mind what it's called: let's check out why it's better than Retrica.<br/><h3>B162 has more free filters</h3><br/><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-82531" height="473" src="http://screenshots.en.sftcdn.net/blog/en/2015/07/b6121.jpg" title="Filters" width="568" />At time of publication <strong>Retrica</strong> (on the right, above) has over 100 filters, but many of them are premium features you have to pay for. Strip these away, and you're left with <strong>55</strong>, where as <strong>B612 has 81 filters</strong>, and they are all free. It's not all good news, as B612 lacks the filter categories that you get with Retrica, so it may take more time to navigate around and learn which filters you really like. Luckily you can mark your favorites, so they are always to hand. We haven't seen much difference in terms of the quality of the filters, so there's really no advantage to Retrica here.<br/><h3>B612 has no ads</h3><br/><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-82532" height="473" src="http://screenshots.en.sftcdn.net/blog/en/2015/07/b6122.jpg" title="Ads" width="568" /><br/><br/>At least for now, there are <strong>no ads</strong> to spoil your peace in B612, nor are there in-app purchases. Retrica has both, and the ads especially get in the way of a smooth user experience. You can take more selfies more quickly with B612, as you are never interrupted by advertising. It's a no-brainer, unless you want to pay to remove ads in Retrica (a very reasonable $0.99).<br/><h3>Options</h3><br/>At first glance, B612 appears to have no options. To find them, you swipe up from the bottom of the screen. Here you can toggle <strong>location</strong> info, <strong>anti-shake</strong>, the B612<strong>watermark</strong>, and more. You can do pretty much the same in Retrica too, as well as upgrade to 'Pro'.<br/><br/><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-82533" height="473" src="http://screenshots.en.sftcdn.net/blog/en/2015/07/b6123.jpg" title="Options" width="568" /><br/><br/>The options menu highlights another difference between the two apps. <strong>Retrica has buttons for everything</strong>, making it easy to understand from the start. <strong>B612 uses gestures</strong> for many things, and if you don't learn them, using the app is tricky. This is a shame, as once you 'get' B612, it's faster and more comfortable to use than Retrica.<br/><h3>B612 does video</h3><br/><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-82534" height="473" src="http://screenshots.en.sftcdn.net/blog/en/2015/07/b6124.jpg" title="Video selfies!" width="568" /><br/><br/>When it comes to photos, the two apps are pretty similar, but <strong>B612 also lets you record short videos</strong>. Simply by tapping and holding your finger, you can record a short video selfie of 3 or 6 seconds. You can share it wherever you like, and even convert it into a GIF, which is pretty cool.<br/><h3>B612 - a selfie machine</h3><br/><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-82535" height="473" src="http://screenshots.en.sftcdn.net/blog/en/2015/07/b6125.jpg" title="B612 Wins!" width="568" /><br/><br/>As we've seen, in terms of features, both B612 and Retrica are pretty similar, except for videos. However, with its streamlined interface, <strong>B612 is quicker and you get more filters too</strong>. Touch the screen anywhere to take a selfie, instead of tapping a button, tap twice to delete, swipe left or right to flip through filters and swipe down to swap cameras. While Waiting For 'Winds Of Winter,' Fans Can Explore New 'Game Of Thrones' Mobile App

With several months left to go before “Game of Thrones” returns for a sixth season, fans of the show can spend some time exploring key moments in the books through a new mobile app. Publisher Harper Collins is releasing “A Game of Thrones: Get Into the Book,” an app that promises to let fans explore the books without having to read through thousands of pages. The app also comes with the option of filtering out parts that may contain spoilers.<br/><br/>The popular HBO fantasy TV series “Game of Thrones” is based on a series of novels written by George R.R. Martin. The books are collectively called “<a href="http://www.georgerrmartin.com/book-category/?cat=song-of-ice-and-fire" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">A Song of Ice and Fire.</a>" According to a report by <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/game-thrones-app-debuts-812170" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">The Hollywood Reporter,</a> app users can explore the literary works and look back at how key scenes were originally written. Users can select the books that they have read and the seasons that they have watched if they want to avoid seeing any spoilers.<br/><br/>The experience is meant to allow fans of both the show and the books to visit key moments without having to scan through thousands of pages in all five published novels. Many fans have also gotten into the habit of comparing the events in the book and the differences that occur in the TV adaptation.<br/><br/>The app also features interactive maps showing the lands of Westeros and Essos. The storyline follows several characters in various locations and the maps can give fans a better perspective.<br/><br/>Regardless of the "no spoiler" feature, many die-hard fans know that there’s very little to be spoiled. At the end of Season 5, the TV series has already used up a majority of the information contained in the published books. Book readers and TV viewers are pretty much on equal footing.<br/><br/>Season 6 of the TV show is already in production and the sixth book installment is also currently awaiting completion and publication. The sixth book, titled “Winds of Winter” is highly anticipated because it holds entirely new information. The fifth book, “A Dance With Dragons” came out later in the same year.<br/><br/>The series has now caught up with the contents of the first five books and author George RR Martin is under immense pressure to complete “Winds of Winter.” So far, no definitive release date for the book has been announced. Meanwhile, the TV show is expected to return for a sixth season in spring 2016 on HBO.

Apple Has Less Cash Than People Believe

When Apple reported its June quarter results it crossed over $200 billion in cash and investments on its balance sheet ($202.8 billion to be exact), which became touted by the press such as CNBC, CNN Money and Bloomberg. While CNN Money and Bloomberg mentioned that the company had about $50 billion in debt it was more of a passing remark than understanding its implication. (Note that I own Apple shares).<br/><br/>It’s net cash that an investor needs to consider<br/><br/>Apple still has a huge amount of net cash of $150.9 billion (subtract $54.4 billion of total debt from the $202.8 billion and ignore the rounding of $0.1 billion) so I’m not trying to degrade what it has but it needs to be kept in context. Think of the extreme example where Apple had borrowed $200 billion to fund dividends and buybacks (we’ll ignore the rating agencies and other reasons this almost assuredly wouldn’t happen). It would then only have $2.8 billion in net cash, which would be a paltry amount. That is one reason investors look at Enterprise Value for a company which is its market cap minus cash and investments plus debt as the true “value” of a company.<br/><br/>Source: Apple<br/>Source: Apple<br/><br/>Apple has a negative $32.7 billion net US cash<br/>Over the past two years Apple has taken on $54.4 billion in debt, which I’ll assume has been used to pay dividends and help fund the stock buyback program. Only US cash in the long-run can be used for these purposes. At some point in time the debt will have to be paid back in US generated cash (assuming no tax holiday) or pay additional taxes on the internationally generated profits. Since the company has about $21.7 billion in US cash as of June it has a negative US cash position of about $32.7 billion.<br/><br/>Apple’s incremental tax rate on international profits is 17%<br/><br/>I’ve gone through the past three years of Apple’s 10-K filings and determined that the incremental tax rate on the company’s overseas profits is 17%. This rate has ranged from 16.5% to 17.0% over the three years.<br/><br/>If you were assume that Apple needed about $20 billion in US cash to run the company and have a war chest to do a large acquisition this would mean it would have to use almost all international cash to pay off all the debt since Apple has about $21.7 billion in US cash. To pay off the $54.4 billion Apple would have to bring back $63.4 billion, which means it would pay $9 billion in additional taxes.<br/><br/>One other item to keep in mind is that any internationally raised debt that is used to pay dividends or buyback stock has to have its interest payments made using US cash.<br/><br/>Cash to run the company and additional taxes cuts Apple’s “net cash” by $9<br/>When you assume $20 billion is needed to run the company and about $30 billion is the amount of additional taxes due as of June 2015 this decrease Apple’s net cash after debt from $26 per share to about $17. While this isn’t a huge haircut it seems both bearish and bullish sell-side analysts use the $26 per share when they compute their price targets when they use cash as part of the equation. This puts the company’s “available” cash at just under $100 billion or about 14% of its market cap.
