Snapchat just got its first in-app purchases.
The messaging app rolled out a major update to its iOS and Android app on Tuesday, which adds in-app purchasing for extra replays and a new feature that lets you layer special effects on top of your selfies.
Replay, a free feature that was first added to the app in 2013, limited users to replaying one Snap per day. With Tuesday's update, you can pay $0.99 for 3 additional replays, though each individual Snapchat can only be replayed once. (That means you have to choose three differentSnaps to replay.)
"We’ve provided one Replay per Snapchatter per day, sometimes frustrating the millions of Snapchatters who receive many daily Snaps deserving of a Replay," read a post on the company's blog. "But then we realized — a Replay is like a compliment! So why stop at just one?"
The update also includes a new feature called "Lenses," which lets you to add special effects to the selfies you take within the app. To activate Lenses, hold down on your face while the front-facing camera is is open, and the app provides instructions about how to use the various effects.
Snapchat says the Lenses will be updated regularly, with a new one being rotated in each day.
Tuesday's update also added a new Trophy Case feature, which unlocks trophies based on achievements like how high your overall Snapchat score is.
UPDATE, September 15, 12:08 p.m. P.T: Snapchat's new selfie features appear to be powered by Looksery, the startup behind apps of the same name whose apps had very similar features. A person familiar with the matter confirmed to Mashable that the Looksery team has joined Snapchat, though terms of the deal are not yet clear. As of Tuesday, Looksery's apps have been removed from the App Store and Google Play.
