The Race for the Ebola Vaccine

<p class="p1"><i>According to a <a href="http://www.who.int/mediacentre/news/releases/2015/effective-ebola-vaccine/en/" target="_blank">statement</a> from WHO Friday, Merck & Co.’s </i><span class="s1"><i>VSV-EBOV </i></span><i>vaccine has proven “highly effective,” with 100 percent efficacy in clinical trials. The vaccine was developed by an Ames-Iowa based pharmaceutical called NewLink and commissioned by the Public Health Agency of Canada. </i></p><br/><p class="p1"><i>The following was originally published on Wednesday, January 7, 2015.</i></p><br/>The need for an <a href="http://www.thedailybeast.com/features/ebola.html">Ebola</a> vaccine in West Africa has never been greater.<br/><br/>While public interest in Ebola continues to dwindle, the epidemic itself continues to soar. On Tuesday, the World Health Organization reported more than 20,000 cases of the disease in West Africa, nearly half of them in Sierra Leone. The death toll, which experts believe has been significantly undercut by secret burials, stands at 7,905. With a mortality rate of 70 percent, the more cases that arise, the deadlier this epidemic becomes.<br/><br/>Although a few smaller companies have become involved in the race for a vaccine, three major pharmaceutical makers are taking the lead—each pursuing a different vaccine. The trials are unprecedented for a variety of reasons, including the rapid timeline (trials of this nature generally take three to four years). Each individual race involves an unusual collaboration between researchers, manufacturers, and public-health entities. Together, the teams are working 24 hours a day for a product that promises much higher risk than it does profit.<br/><br/>Here’s what you need to know about the Ebola vaccine front-runners.<br/><br/><b>1. Johnson & Johnson (J&J)</b><br/><br/><b>Status: </b>Phase 1, first in human trials at University of Oxford<b><br/>Type: </b>Two-shot vaccine, specifically targeting the Zaire species of Ebola<br/><br/>The U.S. drug giant made <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2015-01-06/j-j-starts-ebola-vaccine-trial-in-u-k-increases-output.html" target="_blank">headlines</a> Tuesday with the news that human trials of its experimental Ebola vaccine are now underway in the U.K. Although a late entry to the race—its announcement came in September—J&J has quickly stolen the spotlight. In October, the company pledged more than $200 million to fast track its unique vaccine, which takes a two-pronged approach to immunizing a patient against Ebola.<br/><br/>Seventy-two adults between the ages of 18 and 50 are participating in the trial, led by the pediatrics department at Oxford. The accelerated vaccine utilizes two different treatments—the first to “prime” the patient’s immune system, and the other to “boost” it—each manufactured by separate international biotechnical companies (one, Denmark-based Bavarian Nordic; the other, Netherlands-based Crucell). If successful, Johnson & Johnson <a href="http://www.marketwatch.com/story/johnson-johnson-begins-humans-testing-of-ebola-vaccine-2015-01-06" target="_blank">plans</a> to have as many as 400,000 doses available by April, and up to 5 million by the end of the year.<br/><br/><b>2. GlaxoSmithKline (GSK)</b><br/><br/><b>Status: </b>Phase 2, administering the vaccine to thousands of Ebola workers<b><br/>Type: </b>Two different specific strains of Ebola delivered via a chimpanzee carrier virus<br/><br/>British drug behemoth GlaxoSmithKline got a head start on J&J, partnering with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) to begin human trials of an experimental Ebola vaccine in late August. GSK’s involvement springs from Okairos, a Swiss-Italian biotechnology company that it acquired in 2013. The vaccine was co-developed by Okairos and a team of American scientists led by Dr. Nancy J. Sullivan, chief of Biodefense Research Section in NIAID’s Vaccine Research Center.<br/><br/>The NIAID/DSK vaccine is different from J&J’s in that it contains segments of the Ebola virus’s genetic material from two different strains: Zaire (this current outbreak) and Sudan. The vaccine is <a href="http://www.nih.gov/news/health/nov2014/niaid-28.htm" target="_blank">delivered</a> through a “carrier virus” that causes a common cold in chimpanzees but does not affect humans. Twenty adults in Bethesda, Maryland, were injected with the vaccine for the Phase 1 trial in August. The trials produced positive results, published in <em>The</em> <i>New England Journal of Medicine</i> in November. Four weeks after the injections, all 20 of the participants had developed the antibodies needed to stave off the infection. The next phase of the trial consists of vaccinating Ebola workers on the front lines. A date has yet to be announced.<br/><br/><b>3. Merck & Co.</b><br/><br/><b>Status: </b>Phase 1, restarting first in human trials at lower dose due to complaints of joint pain<b><br/>Type: </b>Genetically engineered version of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV)<br/><br/>Decidedly the underdog in this fight is American pharmaceutical company Merck & Co., whose effort rests on a tiny Ames, Iowa-based biotechnology company called NewLInk Genetics Corp. Merck bought the rights to NewLink’s vaccine in late November, a treatment that was initially commissioned by the Public Health Agency of Canada in 2011 for $200,000.<br/><br/>NewLink’s vaccine, VSV-Zebov, is “based in part on a genetically engineered version of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV).” The gene for the outer protein of the VSV virus, which is incredibly rare in humans, is replaced with a segment of the gene from the Ebola Zaire species. The company began Phase 1 first in human trials in December, after getting approval from the Federal Drug Administration. But the trials, conducted at the University Hospitals of Geneva, were halted when volunteers reported joint pain as a result of the injection. The Phase 1 trials are set to resume this week, using a lower dose of the vaccine.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus 16 Megapixel Camera Confirmed

As well as the Galaxy Note 5, Samsung will announced the <a href="http://www.geeky-gadgets.com/samsung-galaxy-s6-edge-plus-may-have-4gb-of-ram-27-07-2015/">Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus</a> and their press event on the 13th of August.<br/><br/>We previously heard that the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus would come with a 16 megapixel rear camera, this has now been confirmed by India’s import database, Zauba.<br/><br/>The handset is listed on Zauba with a 16 megapixel camera, the same camera that is used on the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, the device will come with a 5 megapixel front camera.<br/><br/>Other specifications on the New Galaxy S6 Edge Plus include a 5.7 inch QHD display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels, the handset will be powered by a Samsung Exynos 7420 processor and will come with 4GB of RAM.<br/><br/>We will have more details on this new version of the S6 Edge along with the new Galaxy Note 5 when it is announced next month.

Razer will make good on Ouya’s indie dev debts

One of the big pushes made with the launch of the Ouya game console was the Free the Games Fund. When Razer bought the Ouya name and software this week, word initially was that Razer wouldn’t be touching the outstanding debt, but it looks like that’s not the case.<br/><br/>The Free the Games Fund had Ouya matching, with some limitations, crowdfunding raised by developers to help them get their games going on the new console. 27 developers joined the program and were promised in total about $1 million dollars. A few of the developers reached their goals and got their funding, while another bunch received some of it. At the time of the sale, though, over a half million dollars was left unpaid.<br/><br/>Razer’s deal didn’t include the hardware or the fund, but in speaking to <em>Polygon</em>, Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan said that that since Razer is backing the Ouya publishing arm, they “are going to try to make good on this fund and give these developers an option.”<br/><br/>The developers who sign on with Razer are no longer obligated to remain exclusive to the Ouya platform, but to receive the funds – which Razer is under no legal obligation to provide – they’ll be required to give away some copies of the game on the Ouya storefront once the game is finished. Tan gave the example of a developer publishing a $10 game and receiving $10,000 in funding having to give away 1,000 copies of the game. Razer is basically treating it something like guaranteed sales.<br/><br/>This is an interesting compromise that seems to be very beneficial to the developers. If they can meet their milestones and put the game out, they’re guaranteed that a certain number of copies of the game will be out there in the wild, giving them some potential word of mouth while they put the game out on other stores instead of having to wait.

Samsung to 'adjust' pricing of the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge to maintain sales momentum

Canon's New Camera Sees More In the Dark Than You Ever Thought Possible

<p class="first-text" data-textannotation-id="3ab1df4208896498a603bf3142c38355">Anyone who’s ever been frustrated at the task of shooting video in low light should be poised to freak out over Canon’s weird and amazing new camera. It’s a video camera that shoots full HD color footage in almost complete darkness.</p><br/><p data-textannotation-id="362fceae039520423773bcef000f5a74">The ‘multi-purpose’ camera, dubbed only MH20F-SH, has a full-frame sensor with 2.26 megapixels. The reason for the meager resolution is because each pixel is very large—19 microns to be exact. That’s 7.5x larger than, say, the pixels found on a flagship DSLR like the Canon 1Dx. Huge pixels mean they can capture a huge amount of light.</p><br/><p data-textannotation-id="3bf02540c141153ac7912e7606902857">In this case, Canon’s sensor reaches an insane 4,000,000 ISO. Yeah, four million. Basically it sees better in the dark than you can. Remember, this is without infrared night vision tricks. New Moto G adds 4G LTE, 13-megapixel camera for $180

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. That appears to be Motorola's stance with its budget-friendly <a href="http://www.cnet.com/products/motorola-moto-g-review/">Moto G</a> smartphone. The newly announced third-generation model retains many of the qualities users loved in the older models, while adding a faster processor, an improved camera, and making the phone water-resistant up to 1M for 30 minutes.<br/><br/>Hardware, however, is only half of the story when it comes to the Moto G. A large part of what has made the phone so popular is the price, and that's not going to change. The third-generation <a href="http://www.cnet.com/uk/products/motorola-moto-g/" data-is-autolink="true">Moto G </a>will be available for $180 without a contract. That price converts to about £115 in the UK and AU$250 in Australia.<br/><br/>The Moto G is equipped with the same 5-inch 1,280 x 720-pixel resolution display as last year's model. That works out to about 293 pixels per inch, which is just shy of the <a href="http://www.cnet.com/uk/products/apple-iphone-6/" data-is-autolink="true">iPhone 6</a> (326 ppi). While the design is largely the same, the phone has received a welcomed hardware boost.<br/><br/>The phone is powered by a 1.4GHz quad-core Snapdragon 410 processor with Adreno 306 graphics. A major complaint with last year's model was the lack of 4G LTE support. This year's Moto G feels like another cheap champion

It's a little hard not to look at <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2015/07/28/motorola-moto-g-third-gen-india/">the Moto G</a> as one of the less interesting devices we saw today -- after all, it got unveiled in India well while plenty of us were sleeping and it was quickly overshadowed by the unlocked beauty of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2015/07/28/the-moto-x-style-is-big-gorgeous-and-of-course-highly-customi/">Moto X Style</a>. Motorola clearly doesn't see it the same way. The Moto G has been the best-selling smartphone in the company's history, and it had to make sure that this year's model struck a crucial balance between price and performance. We just got our own unit to fiddle around with, and so far, Motorola has another cheap champion on its hands.<br/><br/>As we know, this year's Moto G is powered by a 1.4GHz quad-core Snapdragon 410, but there's a there's crucial difference between the two major models available today. The baseline model — the one we just got — costs $179, but only has 8GB of storage and 1GB of RAM. In all likelihood, you're going to want the model starting at $219 since it has double the storage and RAM for, not accounting for all your MotoMaker add-ons.<br/><p class="image-container"><img alt="" data-credit="AOL" data-mep="898515" src="http://o.aolcdn.com/hss/storage/midas/e6308c30a3bbfa64d5c51ffd02c87901/202383068/p7280304.jpg" /></p><br/>Sussing out performance in situations like this is always a crapshoot, but the combination of some decent silicon and an almost-completely-stock version of Android 5.1.1 Lollipop mean there's not much room for hiccups just yet. Not everything worked the way it should right out of the gate, though. I spent a good 10 seconds trying to figure out why the on-screen shift key wouldn't work when punching in a WiFi password, and the despite setting the system language to English, the very first notification that popped up in my shade was something en Francais. Still haven't been able to figure that one out. Still, after installing some apps and taking the Chrome for a spin, I didn't notice much in the way of glaring slow-down. The Snapdragon 410 certainly won't blow you away, but at first blush it's easily <em>as</em> solid — if not moreso — than most of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2015/07/22/unlocked-phone-shootout-meet-the-huawei-p8-lite-and-oppo-r7/">the other low-cost unlocked smartphones</a> I've played with lately. Smarter features like Moto Assist work just as well as they always have too, which only helps Motorola stand out from the madding crowd.<br/><p class="image-container"><img alt="" data-credit="AOL" data-mep="898516" src="http://o.aolcdn.com/hss/storage/midas/394db93783d3617632b0da35b24fca21/202383070/p7280296.jpg" /></p><br/>So yes, the Moto G is finally starting to feel a little more premium -- thankfully looks are catching up too. There's still a sizable bezel running around the 5-inch 720p screen, but the addition of a metallic accent around the 13-megapixel camera and flash add a welcome dose of style to the thing. Oh, and there's a very good chance your Moto G will look better than ours since you'll be able to run it through the MotoMaker wringer, choosing your own colors for the accents and backplates. While I'm rambling on about the Moto G's back, it's been said that it has the same camera as the Nexus 6. Turns out that's not the full story. Yes, the Moto G uses the same 13-megapixel Sony sensor as its much bigger cousin and a similar f/2.0 aperture lens. The differences lie in the way the elements around it are constructed -- the lens is loaded up with IR-filtering coatings that help the camera handle ambient light more intelligently. I haven't spent too much time with the thing yet, but early results are pretty impressive -- it more accurately exposed a photo of me in a darkish room than a similarly priced Samsung phone.<br/><br/>It's obviously way too early to start passing judgment on this thing, but one thing seems clear from the get-go: Motorola still knows how to make a good, cheap phone. We'll update this story with more nuanced impressions as they develop, and stay tuned for our full review in the days to come.
