War never changes, you say? Well why the hell not?</div>

Like its cryogenically preserved protagonist, <em>Fallout 4</em> feels like a game out of time. There are probably millions of 1s and 0s in the code that would argue this point, but playing the game now, five years after predecessor <em>Fallout: New Vegas</em>, you can't shake the feeling that so little has changed.</div>
<div class="see-also" style="font-weight: bold; text-transform: uppercase;">
<div class="inline-ad-seealso" style="margin: 0px 18.75px 0px auto; max-width: 625px;">
</div>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
That's not the most horrid sin a game can commit, but the familiarity is hard to swallow during a 12-month period that's seen games like <em>Dragon Age: Inquisition</em>, <em>Destiny</em> and <em>The Witcher 3</em>reinvent what an open world role-playing game can be. Mechanically <em>Fallout 4</em> feels like a heavily modded version of its older self. Not a good look in late 2015.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
It's not for lack of trying. The game spills over with new systems that let you customize your post-apocalyptic journey in a variety of ways. Companions join you for much of the adventure — if you want them around, that is — and every bit of gear you collect can be modified with parts that you build using scrap collected from around the ruins of Boston.</div>

The redemption of <em>Fallout</em>'s ceaseless scrap hunt goes even further with settlements that you can reclaim, populate with human survivors and build. Physically build. A new mechanic allows you to construct the basics of life — shelter, food/water, jukeboxes — in specific locations, after you've reclaimed the territory from the post-nuke wastes.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
In theory, these are great ideas that significantly expand the potential scope of <em>Fallout 4</em>.<a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" name="youre-more-than-just" style="color: #00aeef;"></a></div>
<span class="microcontent" data-description="You're more than just a survivor; you are an agent of change in this world." data-fragment="youre-more-than-just" data-micro="1">You're more than just a survivor; you are an agent of change in this world.</span> Tour through your settlements and you can see that change firsthand. Settlers arrive to work the land as infrastructure, the infrastructure <em>you</em> create, rises around them.<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Unfortunately the practical execution here is lacking, mostly because of how dated the bones of this game are. Nowhere is this more evident than in the building tools. If you just want to drop a prefab wooden house into a vacant, flat space, great. You're good to go. But that's not the promise of <em>Fallout 4</em>, is it?</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
This is supposed to be your wasteland to customize, but when you dig deeper into the building tools, trying to piece together discrete wall/floor/ceiling tiles or — heaven forbid — build on a surface that's less than flat, the cracks show. Flat tiles hover unconvincingly above uneven surfaces after you place them. Wall corners can't be inverted. You're constantly wrestling with the "snap-to" feature that's supposed to auto-connect adjacent tiles.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Companion management is a similar headache. To give someone who's with you an order, you need to get close and talk to them. That's just not possible in most combat situations, and it turns companions into more of a diversion than anything else. There's also no easy way to locate companions that aren't traveling with you or see how your relationships stack up. Something as simple as an extra menu would have solved that.</div>

As welcome as these new additions are to the <em>Fallout </em>universe, they also feel like fan mods in the way they rely on existing systems to solve problems. Companion management is a tool of the game's existing dialogue mechanics. Settlement building layers new elements into the world without taking terrain into account. This stuff is great, but it feels tacked on.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Making matters worse is the game's generally uneven performance (based on my Xbox One review playthrough). The frame rate hiccups along, running smooth one minute then stuttering and halting the next. Load times are excessively long, sometimes for no good reason; two minutes to load an interior that consists of two small rooms? Why?</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
These shortcomings are all the more frustrating when you step back from them and bask in the massive, beautifully detailed world that Bethesda Softworks built. <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" name="this-is-afalloutgame-to" style="color: #00aeef;"></a></div>
<span class="microcontent" data-description="This is a Fallout game to the core. The thrill of exploration and discovery is at the heart of the experience." data-fragment="this-is-afalloutgame-to" data-micro="1">This is a <em>Fallout</em> game to the core. The thrill of exploration and discovery is at the heart of the experience.</span> It always feels like there's more to find, more to uncover.<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
That's because there is. The game bombards you with information — random radio broadcasts, readable "holotapes," passers-by in need of help — and leaves the choice of who to help, who to hurt and who to ignore in your hands. That's old hat for these games, but this is still a whole new world with a whole new cast. The base joy of soaking it all in remains as powerful as it's ever been.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Being able to customize your gear even injects new purpose into your explorations. While crafting itself isn't explained very clearly, there's now real value in all your scavenging. Everything you collect, right down to battered clipboards and burnt textbooks, has a use as scrap for the parts heap. Exploration has always been important in <em>Fallout</em>, and now it helps propel your progress in a completely new way.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
The story has matured too. What starts out as one parent's journey for their kidnapped son — you can be the father <em>or</em> the mother, it's up to you — eventually snowballs into a far-ranging conflict that threatens every living being in the nuke-blasted remains of the Boston region.</div>

It's a familiar scene: artificial intelligence, embodied in Synths built by a mysterious scientific organization known as The Institute, is society's newest minority. The ones that look like robots are easy enough to target, but newer-model bio-mechanical Synths mirror humans inside and out. Humanity is still on the ropes 200 years after the bombs fell, and the reason why is pretty obvious: We never forgot how to hate.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
The tech-hoarding Brotherhood of Steel stands in opposition to The Institute and its insular ways. The Railroad, meanwhile, simply wants to liberate Synths and give them the same freedoms that humans enjoy. And standing at the center of these tidal forces is you, freshly unfrozen after a 200-year nap. Your decisions influence which of these interests comes out on top.</div>

<span class="microcontent" data-description="Fallout 4's big win doesn't just come from making these choices matter; they also feel real." data-fragment="fallout-s-big-win" data-micro="1"><em>Fallout 4</em>'s big win doesn't just come from making these choices matter; they also feel real.</span> As an occasional ally to all three competing interests, you get an inside glimpse at their differing perspectives. No one is truly evil. Everyone's out to save the sum total of humanity, if not the individuals in one location or another.<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
The moral journey you embark on in <em>Fallout 4</em> is rife with pitfalls. Close allies and friends are easy to find, but this isn't a game where you sway competing philosophies. Sometimes, people have to die. Even comrades. It's a slow burn, but the game frequently challenges you to think and decide what's right from your own perspective once the pieces fall into place.</div>

I made some big decisions in the final 10 hours that led me to stick with friends. I liked working with them and I appreciated their larger goals, but I didn't agree with some of their methods. That should have been a warning sign. My game ended in a way I wasn't happy with because my friends turned out to be selfish (if altruistic) dicks. I could have gone another way and murdered those friends, but that would have just been another flavor of dissatisfaction.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
That's not a knock on <em>Fallout 4</em>. The story's big ending isn't supposed to leave you happy. The choices you make determine the winner, but this isn't a case of good vs. evil. Whoever wins in<em>Fallout 4</em>, someone loses. And it's always going to be someone close to you. You have no idea how powerful that is until you're making those final choices yourself.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
All of which makes it an even greater shame that <em>Fallout 4</em> is such a mess from a technical perspective. Story aside, this is just another <em>Fallout </em>game. That's great and everything; I'll put another 60 hours into a fresh playthrough at some point, no question. But you deserve more than just another game. You deserve a better one. And <em>Fallout 4</em> doesn't quite get there.</div>

LONDON — The cool <em>Star Wars</em> merch keeps on coming. Last week it was all Millennium Falcon speakers and custom Landspeeder beds (the latter sadly a DIY effort).</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
This week, it's Stormtrooper and C-3PO speakers - officially endorsed by Lucasfilm and Disney.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Available from today (Wednesday) on Kickstarter from £99 ($150), the wireless 2.1 system speakers comprise two tweeters and a subwoofer each and connect to smartphones and tablets via Bluetooth.</div>
<div class="see-also" style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 22.5px; text-transform: uppercase;">

Their eyes glow blue when they're connected and C-3PO says, "I do believe they think I'm some sort of god," when he connects. The Stormtrooper simply declares: "Move along."</div>

The speakers are closely modelled on the props from the films, but feature grills and vents where stickers were used on the originals, the makers say. You can also answer phone calls through a built-in mic, if you don't mind talking to a disembodied head.</div>

<br />
<div class="story-intro" style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #292929; font-family: LiberationSerifRegular, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 19px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 23px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<div style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; padding: 0px 0px 14px; vertical-align: baseline; word-wrap: break-word;">
<span style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: LiberationSerifBold, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">IN case you haven’t heard, one of the most realistic video games of all time debuted recently for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. “Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain” is a third-person shooter that lets you roam around army bases in Afghanistan and shoot the bad guys.</span></div>
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #292929; font-family: LiberationSerifRegular, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 19px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 23px; padding: 0px 0px 14px; vertical-align: baseline; word-wrap: break-word;">
However, its open-ended gameplay, unscripted sequences, and factors like sound and changing weather create a sense of actually being on the battlefront. It’s a technical achievement that has earned rave reviews. As I found by playing the game myself, there’s nothing quite like it.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #292929; font-family: LiberationSerifRegular, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 19px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 23px; padding: 0px 0px 14px; vertical-align: baseline; word-wrap: break-word;">
About that open-ended gameplay: The sense of “being there” comes from the game’s overall structure. You can go anywhere and do anything. When you sneak into a base, you can decide to blow up a tanker, crawl through a sewer, or run right through the main gate. In one early scene, I managed to crawl through the entire base without any confrontations.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #292929; font-family: LiberationSerifRegular, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 19px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 23px; padding: 0px 0px 14px; vertical-align: baseline; word-wrap: break-word;">
Gaming expert Chris Ferguson, a professor at Stetson University, told FoxNews.com this open-ended gameplay helps gamers feel as though they are accomplishing something, which adds to the realism. He explained how the Self Determination Theory is at play.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #292929; font-family: LiberationSerifRegular, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 19px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 23px; padding: 0px 0px 14px; vertical-align: baseline; word-wrap: break-word;">
“We often turn to games to help us get needs met that aren’t met in real life. More realistic games can make our accomplishments seem more important, again at least within the game universe and do more to help us get those needs met by games,” he says.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #292929; font-family: LiberationSerifRegular, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 19px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 23px; padding: 0px 0px 14px; vertical-align: baseline; word-wrap: break-word;">
Apart from the open gameplay, the graphics are also ultra-convincing.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #292929; font-family: LiberationSerifRegular, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 19px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 23px; padding: 0px 0px 14px; vertical-align: baseline; word-wrap: break-word;">
For example, in the opening sequences of the game, there’s a mounting sense of dread, accented with ominous music and flickering lights that’s exacerbated by how close you feel to the action.</div>
<div class="article-media article-media-inline article-media-inline-embedded" style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; clear: both; color: #292929; font-family: LiberationSerifRegular, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 19px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 23px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<div class="module" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<div class="module-content" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<div class="youtube-iframe" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; height: 0px; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px 0px 20px; overflow: hidden; padding: 0px 0px 365.625px; position: relative; vertical-align: baseline;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/A9JV0EvCkMI" style="border-width: 0px; bottom: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; height: 365.625px; left: 0px; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; position: absolute; top: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; width: 650px;"></iframe></div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #292929; font-family: LiberationSerifRegular, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 19px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 23px; padding: 0px 0px 14px; vertical-align: baseline; word-wrap: break-word;">
Several sequences take place just a few feet or even a few inches from you. More than anything, the game puts you inside the head of the main character who has a prosthetic limb and multiple gunshot wounds. His dire condition makes you want to help him.In another scene after the long introduction, you see the main character riding horseback in a sandstorm. The camera angle is perfect — you see the foreground rocks and the horse pushing against the wind. Blink twice and you might think it’s a movie.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #292929; font-family: LiberationSerifRegular, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 19px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 23px; padding: 0px 0px 14px; vertical-align: baseline; word-wrap: break-word;">
One of the main tricks the game uses to convince you the action is real is that the camera moves as though someone is holding it. After the storm passes, the camera jumps like your eye would — first looking down, then up, then following the main character up a ravine. When you look through a pair of binoculars and zoom in, the graphics blur and lose focus as though steam is rising.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #292929; font-family: LiberationSerifRegular, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 19px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 23px; padding: 0px 0px 14px; vertical-align: baseline; word-wrap: break-word;">
Sound plays a major role here. In some scenes during a heavy rainstorm, you can run faster because your footsteps are not as loud. You ride a horse in the game to cross the desert faster, but if you go prone, you can sneak around undetected.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #292929; font-family: LiberationSerifRegular, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 19px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 23px; padding: 0px 0px 14px; vertical-align: baseline; word-wrap: break-word;">
The day-to-night changes impact the realism as well. At night, your aim is not as good but you can sneak around easier and enemies won’t be able to see you.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #292929; font-family: LiberationSerifRegular, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 19px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 23px; padding: 0px 0px 14px; vertical-align: baseline; word-wrap: break-word;">
Dmitri Williams, an USC professor who studies the science of games, told FoxNews.com that games like Metal Gear Solid 5 are just about to cross a threshold into photorealism.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #292929; font-family: LiberationSerifRegular, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 19px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 23px; padding: 0px 0px 14px; vertical-align: baseline; word-wrap: break-word;">
Fergusson says we’re edging closer to a time when video games are more like interactive movies that gives us a richer sense of character development and visual excitement.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #292929; font-family: LiberationSerifRegular, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 19px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 23px; padding: 0px 0px 14px; vertical-align: baseline; word-wrap: break-word;">
We’ll see when the next game can top “Metal Gear Solid V.”</div>

<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Hulu and Netflix are jumping on the virtual reality train. All aboard, early adopters.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Both streaming video services will soon offer virtual reality apps that let users explore content and watch what they want in 3D virtual spaces. Netflix is up first, with an app launching in theGear VR store on Thursday, just hours after it was announced on stage at Oculus Connect.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
While the video itself plays inside the headset on a virtual screen — banish all hopes of stepping into your favorite TV show or movie, at least for now — the app's browsing interface is an interactive "Netflix Living Room." This is a valuable feather in Netflix's cap, marking the "first" subscription video app for VR and yet another platform for the ubiquitous service.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Hulu's plans are a little further out, with its VR app set to launch sometime in the fall of 2015. In addition to a new VR browsing interface for existing Hulu programming, you can expect to find some amount of original content as well. The first such offering is <em>The Big One</em>, a bonus short film connected to Hulu's <em>RocketJump: The Show</em>.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
This is just the start, too. Oculus VR revealed a number of other incoming apps Thursday, including content from Twitch, Vimeo, TiVo, Facebook (obviously) and more. Which is perfect timing, given the reveal of a $99 Gear VR consumer edition and the imminent arrival of Oculus Rift.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">

Here's <em>Bullet Train</em>, summed up: Train rolls into station; you get out and immediately starting shooting tons of dudes. Preferably in the face. No one's ever accused Epic Games of being subtle.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
The studio that created <em>Gears of War</em> announced its first Oculus Touch game when founder and CEO Tim Sweeney took the stage at Oculus Connect on Thursday. There's no release date, but it's a good bet that this one will launch alongside Touch when it arrives in 2016.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
In <em>Bullet Train</em>, players use the Rift headset's unique hand controllers to gun down an army of bad guys, with a little help from teleportation powers, time manipulation and heavy explosives. It's better seen than described, so check out the game's first trailer up top.</div>

Adult Swim loves to tinker. First, there was a virtual reality-fueled journey into psychedelia with <em>The Virtual Brainload</em>. Then there was that <em>Rick and Morty</em> Instagram game. Now, <em>Adventure Time </em>is getting in on the fun.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em; text-align: left;">
<em>Adventure Time: Magic Man's Head Games</em> sends players off on an adventure with their pals from the show, Finn and Jake. As you can see in the trailer above, the game borrows its basic design from classic third-person platforming games like <em>Super Mario 64</em>. Except you're in VR, so you can look around freely and use line of sight to perform light puzzle-solving.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em; text-align: left;">
<em>Magic Man's Head Games</em> features the same voice cast that's helped to make the show so popular. Players take the role of Tiny, a monster that Magic Man transforms into a balloon. You trail along behind Finn and Jake as the duo sets out to return Tiny to his original form.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em; text-align: left;">
Created by Pendleton Ward, Adult Swim's <em>Adventure Time</em> follows Finn and Jake as they get into and out of all sorts of trouble in the post-apocalyptic Land of Ooo. The show's irreverent sense of humor and penchant for referencing everything from <em>Dungeons & Dragons</em> to video games has made it a popular one in the geekier corners of fandom.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em; text-align: left;">
<em>Magic Man's Head Games</em> comes from Turbo Button, the team that made the inventive <em>SMS Racing. </em>It's a short experience, but it's available now for free in the Gear VR app store.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em; text-align: left;">

<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
The creators of the beautiful, haunting mobile puzzle game <em>Monument Valley</em> want to take players on another scenic trip — this time entirely in virtual reality.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Creative agency Ustwo's next game, <em>Land's End</em>, will take players across picturesque landscapes inspired by some of Earth's prettiest places. Much like <em>Monument Valley</em>, which won an Apple Design Award in 2014, the game looks particularly stunning.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
<em>Land's End</em> is all about exploration. You move at a leisurely pace through striking scenes by finding the next available point and focusing on it. Once you've locked on, you're transported there at a comfortable speed — a compromise that lets a VR experience like <em>Land's End</em> work without a controller.</div>

"When we first got our hands on a Gear VR kit, we spent two to three months trying to find a way for people to move around this world without feeling sick," said Peter Pashley, technical director of Ustwo Games. "We wanted an experience where we could explore the landscapes comfortably, where people feel like they were making choices and moving at their own free will, while not be too hard to control and not too on rails."</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Through the game's five levels, there will also be some puzzles to solve, though gratification seems to be more important to the user experience than truly stumping those playing. Ustwo Games' lead designer Ken Wong told <em>Mashable</em> that balance emerged after testing the game on all sorts of people, especially those that don't normally play games.</div>

One of the big pushes made with the launch of the Ouya game console was the Free the Games Fund. When Razer bought the Ouya name and software this week, word initially was that Razer wouldn’t be touching the outstanding debt, but it looks like that’s not the case.<br/><br/>The Free the Games Fund had Ouya matching, with some limitations, crowdfunding raised by developers to help them get their games going on the new console. 27 developers joined the program and were promised in total about $1 million dollars. A few of the developers reached their goals and got their funding, while another bunch received some of it. At the time of the sale, though, over a half million dollars was left unpaid.<br/><br/>Razer’s deal didn’t include the hardware or the fund, but in speaking to <em>Polygon</em>, Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan said that that since Razer is backing the Ouya publishing arm, they “are going to try to make good on this fund and give these developers an option.”<br/><br/>The developers who sign on with Razer are no longer obligated to remain exclusive to the Ouya platform, but to receive the funds – which Razer is under no legal obligation to provide – they’ll be required to give away some copies of the game on the Ouya storefront once the game is finished. Tan gave the example of a developer publishing a $10 game and receiving $10,000 in funding having to give away 1,000 copies of the game. Razer is basically treating it something like guaranteed sales.<br/><br/>This is an interesting compromise that seems to be very beneficial to the developers. If they can meet their milestones and put the game out, they’re guaranteed that a certain number of copies of the game will be out there in the wild, giving them some potential word of mouth while they put the game out on other stores instead of having to wait.

<br/><br/>Mary Jo Foley from ZDNet held a <a href="http://www.zdnet.com/article/ceo-nadella-talks-microsofts-mobile-ambitions-windows-10-strategy-hololens-and-more/">comprehensive exclusive interview</a> with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella yesterday, right after his Worldwide Partner Conference keynote. In it, she asked him about the future of Microsoft in the mobile sphere and many other questions that people have been asking Microsoft’s CEO to be direct about. The entire interview is insightful and gives a great look at Microsoft from the perspective of its leader. These are just a few major highlights:<br/><br/><strong>Microsoft is not leaving the mobile market</strong><br/><br/> <br/><br/>When asked by Mary Jo Foley “So, does Microsoft cutting back on the number of Windows Phones you make mean you are getting out of the mobile market?” Satya Nadella began by frankly saying “Not at all.” He then continued to explain what mobile means and how Windows Phone plays in.<br/><br/>He admitted that Microsoft wrongly assumed the desktops would be “the hub for everything for all time to come.” He then made points that answer many questions the media and fans have been asking about the future of Windows Phone.<br/><br/>Nadella speaks of Windows Phone in the future sense, not something they’re going to kill in the near future. Quotes like “When I think about our Windows Phone, I want it to stand for something like Continuum” and “that’s what I want our devices and device innovation to stand for” don’t sound like a CEO tickling the kill switch for Windows Phone. He even specifically addressed last week’s news:<br/><blockquote>Last week’s announcement was not about any change to our vision and strategy, but for sure it was a change to our operating approach… I’m not going to launch a phone a day. I’m going to focus on a few phones that actually grab share that, in fact, showcase our uniqueness.</blockquote><br/>Nadella showed an awareness of Windows Phone’s low market share and wants to take steps to make it unique that will “actually grab share.”<br/><br/><strong>The Surface analogy made by Kevin Turner is largely correct</strong><br/><br/> <br/><br/>Foley asked about the analogy to the Surface, basically that Microsoft makes devices that show off what a platform can do and then other OEMs make competing devices on that platform. Nadella said the analogy was correct. He also clearly stated how the Lumia line will play a roll with Windows Phone “if no OEM stands up to build Windows devices we’ll build them. There will be Lumia devices.”<br/><br/><strong>The draw of Universal apps is the desktop</strong><br/><br/>Nadella didn’t mince words about Windows Phone’s market share. He repeatedly talked about 3%. When asked why people would develop Universal apps after last week’s announcements he said that “The reason why anybody would want to write universal apps is not because of our three percent share in phones. It’s because a billion consumers are going to have a Start Menu, which is going to have your app.”<br/><br/>Nadella is very aware that the high user numbers are on the desktop. When explaining the roll of the Start Menu in Windows 10 he stated that “If anything, the free upgrade for Windows 10 is meant to improve our phone position.”<br/><br/><strong>The three phone segments announced last week represent different priorities</strong><br/><br/>When asked about the three segments of phones, Nadella took some time to break down the differences between the categories. A takeaway is that different users have different priorities. Where a business will value security and custom apps, a value user is more about Skype and Office for “the first time smart phone buyer.”<br/><div id="block-inject-1" class="block-inject block-inject-1"><section id="block-block-28" class="block block-block"><br/><div class="content"><section class="ifumissedit"><br/><div><br/><div id="DfpVisibilityIdentifier_8814556181896478" class="GoogleActiveViewClass"><br/><div id="google_ads_div_253511"><iframe id="google_ads_iframe_253511" src="about:blank" name="google_ads_iframe_253511" width="300" height="250" frameborder="0" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" scrolling="no"></iframe></div><br/></div><br/></div><br/><div><iframe width="300" height="250" frameborder="0" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" scrolling="no"></iframe></div><br/></section></div><br/></section></div><br/><div class="clearfix"></div><br/><strong>HoloLens in business, not just gaming</strong><br/><br/><img alt="HoloLens" class="lazy image-watermark inserted" data-original="http://www.winbeta.org/sites/default/files/styles/watermark/public/news/HoloLens_Demo-9.JPG?itok=LxiTTPfU" height="328" src="http://www.winbeta.org/sites/default/files/styles/watermark/public/news/HoloLens_Demo-9.JPG?itok=LxiTTPfU" title="HoloLens" width="491" /><br/><br/>When asked about where HoloLens will play a roll and be utilized, Nadella stated that it will initially be about enterprise and developers, specifically referencing hospitals, healthcare, and retail. He did point out however that he purchased Minecraft to “create a new genre of gaming for mixed reality.” Nadella pointed out that Minecraft is the number one PC app, console app, and paid mobile app on iOS and Android. In Nadella’s eyes, HoloLens will “bride consumer to enterprise.”<br/><br/><strong>Microsoft and Google, and other big name companies having partnerships</strong><br/><br/>Mary Jo also asked Nadella about Microsoft’s relationships with big companies including Google. Even though the media and other companies often points out how Microsoft has changed how it works with other large companies, Nadella doesn’t view it that way. He pointed out that many multi-billion-dollar companies were “built on top of Windows.” He even went as far as to say that Google wouldn’t exist if they couldn’t have “built a browser for Windows.” He calls Windows a “platform company, and wants to keep that up. Microsoft has formed major partnerships with SalesForce, Dropbox, Adobe and more and partnerships like that look to continue to be a part of Microsoft’s future.<br/><br/>Nadella also added that he’d love to have Google work with them more, specifically referring to YouTube on Windows Phone and Chrome on Windows (referring to an app, Chrome is already available on the desktop).<br/><br/><strong>The Surface Mini</strong><br/><br/>While the majority of the interview was on the future of Microsoft, Mary Jo also asked Nadella about the Surface Mini. She asked about how Nadella decides what makes a product different enough to launch (the Surface Mini not being released is reported to partially be because it wasn’t differentiated enough). Nadella responded by saying that he “actually [doesn’t] even care about as much initial grand success in terms of volume or share. Does it meet a specific scenario…”<br/><br/>It’s a brilliant interview and is <a href="http://www.zdnet.com/article/ceo-nadella-talks-microsofts-mobile-ambitions-windows-10-strategy-hololens-and-more/">worth taking the time to read</a>.

<img alt="Nokia 105" class="" height="315" src="http://www.winbeta.org/sites/default/files/news/New-Nokia-105-design_feat.jpg" width="461" /><br/><br/> <br/><br/>There are a lot of people who have a smartphone these days. Even a good number of older people who don’t know the first thing about computers might use a smartphone. Still, despite their popularity, there still plenty of people who use those old-fashioned handsets.<br/><br/>One of the most popular of these type handsets is the Nokia 105. This phone is especially popular in European countries, but also has gets a pretty high demand in Asia and Africa. In fact, it's so popular that it might surprise you to hear the rate in which the handset is sold. Having sold over 100 million since 2013, it sells at over 100 per minute -- that's almost 2 phones sold every second.<br/><br/>Microsoft <a href="http://lumiaconversations.microsoft.com/2015/07/14/a-phone-for-two-markets-inside-the-new-nokia-105/">has redesigned the handset</a> to "take all the qualities of a Lumia and build them into the Nokia 105," according to Peter Griffith who works at the London Design Lab as head of Microsoft Phones Design. Griffith continues:<br/><blockquote>"And we wanted to combine that with things like this astonishing battery life and the torchlight that we knew were relevant to people in emerging economies. The big challenge was, could we hit the $20 price point without compromising on quality?"</blockquote><br/>The handset is a very basic phone, and that's about all it's meant to be. It only has very basic dialing buttons and a 4-directional d-pad. It doesn’t even have a volume rocker at all. It has a few basic built in tools such as a calculator, calendar, and stopwatch, and maybe a couple games, but that's about all anyone will get. It does have a flashlight though.<br/><div id="block-inject-1" class="block-inject block-inject-1"><section id="block-block-28" class="block block-block"><br/><div class="content"><section class="ifumissedit"><br/><div><br/><div id="DfpVisibilityIdentifier_3301399503834545" class="GoogleActiveViewClass"><br/><div id="google_ads_div_956912"><iframe id="google_ads_iframe_956912" src="about:blank" name="google_ads_iframe_956912" width="300" height="250" frameborder="0" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" scrolling="no"></iframe></div><br/></div><br/></div><br/><div><iframe width="300" height="250" frameborder="0" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" scrolling="no"></iframe></div><br/></section></div><br/></section></div><br/><div class="clearfix"></div><br/>What's really interesting about this handset is it's really long battery life. It can last almost thirty-five days in standby mode. This makes it great as a backup phone for when your main phone runs out of battery.<br/><div class="fluid-width-video-wrapper"><iframe id="fitvid418697" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/1GIiUjpspa4" width="300" height="150" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe></div><br/>So what do you think about this phone? Do you think it would be useful to you? Do you think it would be worth $20? Tell us what you think in the comments below.

<img alt="Windows 10" class="" height="262" src="http://www.winbeta.org/sites/default/files/styles/watermark/public/news/TH1regedit.jpg?itok=2GKZy4Ed" width="466" /><br/><br/>For those who don't know, Microsoft has been distributing a number of their Windows 10 builds via the "fbl_impressive" development branch, a branch created solely for Insiders and allows Microsoft to control what features are sent to the public for testing. There are many development branches which all focus on different things, however none of them are accessible by Windows Insiders.<br/><br/>Microsoft announced yesterday that they were suspending Windows Update and Windows 10 Insider builds as they prepare for the Windows 10 RTM. The next build offered to Windows Insiders will be using production servers, which means the next build we receive could very well be the Windows 10 RTM, or at the very least an RTM candidate, depending on when Microsoft plans to push another build out.<br/><br/>Microsoft has silently switched all Windows Insiders away from the fbl_impressive branch, and moved them over to the TH1 branch. The TH1 branch is where Microsoft is compiling RTM candidates, which means the next build delivered to Insiders can be nothing but an RTM candidate or the RTM itself. You can check to see if Microsoft has moved you over to TH1 by opening Regedit and navigating to <strong>HKLM>SOFTWARE>Microsoft>WindowsSelfHost>Applicability</strong> and double clicking "BranchName". If you see "TH1" you are ready for the next build.<br/><br/>If you're not showing up as on TH1, just check for updates via Windows Update and the registry strings should update automatically.<br/><div id="block-inject-1" class="block-inject block-inject-1"><section id="block-block-28" class="block block-block"><br/><div class="content"><section class="ifumissedit"><br/><div><br/><div id="DfpVisibilityIdentifier_2330062785185873" class="GoogleActiveViewClass"><iframe src="http://www.winbeta.org/tagspg/300x250_BTF.html" width="300" height="250" frameborder="0" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" scrolling="no"></iframe></div><br/></div><br/><div><iframe width="300" height="250" frameborder="0" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" scrolling="no"></iframe></div><br/></section></div><br/></section></div><br/><div class="clearfix"></div><br/>The Redmond giant announced recently that Windows Insiders will receive the Windows 10 RTM on July 29th. So Microsoft silently moving everyone over to TH1 could be in preparation for that. Regardless, the next build Insiders will receive will be from the TH1 branch, which is very exciting indeed.<br/><br/><em>Thanks for the tips, everyone!</em>
