The dreaded read receipt in Facebook's chat client, Messenger, which has ruined many a friendship by letting your chat buddies know you've seen their messages but haven't replied, is making its way to another Facebook feature: Events.
According to The Daily Dot, which confirmed the news with a Facebook spokesperson, Facebook is testing the ability for event hosts and guests to see whether the folks who were invited have seen the event.
The feature is not live for everyone yet (Facebook says it's just a pilot), and there's no word whether it will ever become standard. But given it already exists (with no official way to disable it) in Messenger and Groups, we wouldn't be too surprised if Facebook decided to add another way for you to lose your friends keep check on who's really coming to that frat-themed party you're throwing Saturday.
The news comes just a day after another controversial decision by Facebook's overlord Mark Zuckerberg. After spending years convincing everyone the social network would not be adding a "dislike" button, he finally caved in, announcing the company is working on it — though it won't really be a downvote but a way to express empathy.
